The latest rage for google and SEO is Google Sitemaps Beta.
From the google site:
Quote:

Help people discover more of your web pages.

Google Sitemaps is an easy way for you to help improve your coverage in the Google index. It's a collaborative crawling system that enables you to communicate directly with Google to keep us informed of all your web pages, and when you make changes to these pages.

With Google Sitemaps you get:

Better crawl coverage to help people find more of your web pages
Fresher search results
A smarter crawl because you can provide specific information about all your web pages, such as when a page was last modified or how frequently a page changes

With so many tools and software to choose from it's a big mess. In this post I will discuss the tools and software that I used to create a sitemap.xml for Cyberpcfix. Here is the file that I created for Cyberpcfix sitemap.xml.

First thing that I did is spent half the day searching and trying out different sitemapper software. Here is sitemapper software that I tried.

Xenu

From the website:
Quote:
Xenu's Link Sleuth (TM) checks Web sites for broken links. Link verification is done on "normal" links, images, frames, plug-ins, backgrounds, local image maps, style sheets, scripts and java applets. It displays a continously updated list of URLs which you can sort by different criteria. A report can be produced at any time.

Indeed this was a very simple to use program that seemed to pick up url's very well and fast. I had a problem with the SID's on forum url's with this and the filter was "do not include any url's that start with" a little tricky. I needed something that could take out single words from url's, but otherwise a very nice program.

Endsheet

From the website:
Quote:
Endsheet is an open source desktop web crawler that builds content for search engines. It's a Windows .NET application and requires that the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 is installed.
Endsheet indexes from local files or the web. It can build the data file for Tipue or the content can be saved in XML or text. An XML schema is included.
Endsheet can also create a Google Sitemap file. For more information see Google Sitemaps.

This was a great program, I found Endsheet really easy to use, had a simple interface with url filtering. The filter seemed to be for complete url's. This one used the .NET Framework available from Microsoft or use Windows Update. All in all this program would best for most users.

Site Map Builder

From the website:
Quote:
Site Map Builder allows you to create the Google SiteMaps XML (Google SiteMaps ) needed within your root directory in order to provide information about your site to Google. This XML must have some syntax that Site Map Builder will generate for you. Just copy and paste the result xml, gzip the file and save it on your site root directory.

This is my favorite that I have found yet. Also built using the .NET framework it has the most features and the best filtering system. Easy to use and multiple export types; google sitemap xml, gzipped google sitemap XML and text file. The test file export option was very handy for sorting out url's. I would crawl a certain area of Cyberpcfix and export to a text file and then copy paste all the url's I wanted into another text file that I called sitemap_final.txt. I found this, combined with the excellent keyword filtering, to be the best for dynamic PHP url's. After I had crawled all the areas of the site that I wanted included and had all the url's listed in the text file, I simply imported the txt file and then exported the list into a sitemap XML file. The only complaint I have with this program is the fact that everytime the program is shut down it pops a browser window that opens to the software's home page.

Another great program that I found that could edit and filter url's in allready generated sitemap files:

SiteMap Tools

From the website:
Quote:
Sitemap Filter is FREE windows tool for picking/filtering certain URLs off from google sitemap XML files and submitting sitemaps to google. Load and Save google XML sitemap files
Load and Save sitemap filter files
Select and filter files off from sitemap
Upload sitemap to your website through FTP
Submit sitemap file to google

This was really handy as well, especially for removing many url's at once from an allready completed xml file. I never tried the submit sitemap to google option, as submiting to google was easy through my gmail account login and password at Google Sitemaps Login Page

For validating the sitemap.xml I used the XML Validator from Microsoft to validate the finished file. You can download the sample from MSDN Validator Sample

Hopefully this new service from Google has a benificial impact on website searching and will help webmasters get more content out into the search listings. Google is a great company with so many "free" tools and software and I hope that this trend continues.
