I have had this a few times now and my friend the other day just asked about this problem so I figure I would post a possible solution.

You hook up the new drive, partition with the install cd or with fdisk or the like. Boot into windows and new device manager wizard finds and installs the new hard drive. You look in My Computer and nothing, check the device manager and sure enough it's there and enabled with no problems. What the heck is going on? Well try this;

Start >> Administrative Tools >> Computer Management or open the Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Computer Management. Choose on the left side "Disk Manager". On the right it will show the drives on your system, if the one you just installed is there then your are on the right track. (see figure 1)

Right-click the new drive and choose "Mark Partition as Active". Windows should then make the drive available for use. If you haven't yet partitioned the drive a dialog to partition the drive will come up and the usuall selection is the "Primary Partition". Then after windows finishes partitioning choose make active.

Just a common problem that makes you wonder what is wrong with windows. Good luck and I hope this helps!
