Just wanted to say a few words about this great program that has saved my hard drives a couple of times now - Testdisk!
First of all, I was reinstalling windows on my main hard drive (I have two drives one for windows and one for storage) and when I rebooted, the storage drive was not seen by windows. I almost freaked, all those great songs, books and everything else (I call the drive EVERYTHING) was gone. I tried using several tools through windows but nothing worked and the other options (like create new partition) were too scary to try. So I searched the net frantically for something that would make my drive re-appear again, and to my frustration I could find nothing. Then I discovered Testdisk, a free, open source, very powerful, tool to undelete and/or recover lost partitions. WOW!!!! What a great tool it is. After a few selections, through a easy text based display, did I instantly find my most important drive back and being seen by windows again!! The relief I had was undescribable, this free program did it in about two minutes. OOOHHHH thank the computer gods.
Secondly, I just recently had a problem with trying to install windows on a laptop with no cdrom. I connected the hard drive, using a connector to my desktop pc, and proceeded to install the first bootable part of the windows install proccess. I was thinking if I could get it to at least have a bootable start then I could continue by having the files from the I386 dir already on the drive. Whoa was that a bad move. The laptop drive did not boot, I found myself with a dual type boot option on starting my desktop pc that one option had nothing but file not found errors. This was driving me crazy. So, I tried the edit the boot.ini file and that did not help (still had the second option for boot), then I tried the copy the ntldr and ntdect.com files from windows recovery mode and that did not help either. Next was the fixmbr command trough recovery console.. nope didn't work either. So on with the fixboot command, oooh that didn't work, but while I had the two options for windows, I still booted into the main windows install and lo and behold no EVERYTHING drive!! Nota, gone, cannot find it. Start panicking again. Then I remembered Testdisk.
Once I read all about the options and what the different selections and settings did, I found that I could simply rewrite the partition sector using Testdisk and with my fingers crossed, whoa, a reboot and voila! The precious drive was once again restored to it's once former prestige of being my most loved and available drive!
I will definatley discuss this great software soon as I can make it back from work and start typing.
TestDisk - the best recovery software that I know! Please get it and try it out if you ever have a problem with any drives not being seen by windows, especially when you know the drive is there and just can't see it in windows!!
