Well its been a few days now since my big upgrade. Im actually quite impressed with how well it's been so far. Since the install it seems that the OS performs slightly better than with SP1. Programs just seem to be more responsive. The firewall offers a few more options than the orginal more in comparison with Norton Personal Firewall. The Internet explorer also has a pretty bang up popup stopper too.

During the install a was happy not to run into any problems along the way. It took about an hour from start to finish with cable internet.

Here is the link to SP2 --- Be sure to read facts/White Papers first

When I first heard about SP2 for windows xp, i was kinda worried. I hear stories about application not working right with it, or patches would get messed up. Bassically the typical stuff. Then when SP2 got delayed, it worried me even more. Other rumors going around were things like, Microsoft was originaly going to charge for this because it was such a huge upgrade. That worried me. When you introduce a huge upgrade to a vat of computer, you are going to see problems. On top of all that, we know how microsoft is about saying, "this is the best thing since the previous windows version." Then they release it and send out serveral new patch for it the next couple days.

All in all, after installing sp2, I was really happy. I didn't see any big problems or application conflicts. I will prompts for when stuff would download from the internet asking me if it was ok. When an application that was new tried to run or connect out, the OS would ask if it was cool. Truthfully, I am really happy with a SP from MS. I couldn't beleive they just about did something right.

Well at first I was really happy with SP2, but then some issues started comming up...

First off, the new update limits half-open tcp connections to 10, which is very low in my opinion (SP1 had unlimited) and it has caused some problems with my private filesharing network that I use for distribution of songs from un-signed bands.

Furthermore, internet explorer has crashed or become unresponsive on several occasions. This is true on a few computers that I have used that have SP2 installed. Not sure what is causing this but I assume there will be some hotfixes on windows update some time soon Wink

Also the fact that the windows update site does not work unless enabled on the local system, which in my opinion is another way for MS to force using of some features that may not be wanted by some people.

And the security center has some usefull features but all in all can be very annoying with the pop up warnings. Especially if it decides that the firewall or antivirus that you paid good money for is not detected by windows (seems funny that these issues arise at the same time a new firewall from windows is available to use). Then you have to turn off the warnings manually, which turns the security center into a useless addon.

The windows firewall is still a low end product that could be compared to some "freeware" firewalls on the net, but still could be usefull for some users with limited knowledge of connections to the net. Yes, the firewall asks if you would like such and such program to access the net, but you still have to go into the settings to fully enable that program's access (on several programs).

All in all I am still happy with this upgrade considering that it will possibly make the net a safer place for the general public. As with all service packs from MS, there should be some fixes out soon, I hope Wink In the end this service pack seems to be a good update for windows, especially for novice users that need a more secure environment without having to configure the system themselves. Smile
