i bought a nexxtech steering wheel. i installed the driver from the website and from the disk i got with this wheel. when i click Add from the Game Controllers in the control panel, a message pops up saying that the gameport driver is missing and that the device is not configured properly and i should consult my device manager...well i don't know what to do once i get to the device manager. my os is xp and i can't find any gameport driver for xp....should i just take this steering wheel back and forget about using game controllers on my two computers?
thanks in advance |

Installing new equipment on a computer can be very frustrating.. Here is what could be happening.. the driver is not installing properly. When you goto the device manager look for any ! or ? marks highlighted in yellow. Then if it is the steering wheel you need to right click and "update driver" and when it askes for the location of the driver point it to the drivers from the website (make sure to extract the files if it is in .zip or .rar format) or the cd. If that doesn't work or if there is no ! or ? in device manager, then if you could post the model number of the steering wheel then we can take a closer look.
Another thing you may want to try is; Install the software then reboot the computer, and then see if you can add in the control panel.
If all fails then remove all steering wheel sotware from add/remove programs and the drivers with the ! or ? next to them (related to the steering wheel) from device manager. Reboot with the steering wheel still connected.. this should force the drivers to be reinstalled.
If there is no entry that refers to the gameport in any way then either your gameport is disabled or it has a fault - that could be a bios problem. If there is more than one gameport entry then right click on each one and choose Uninstall. Once they have gone then click the Scan For Hardware Changes button that looks like a small computer screen with a magnifying glass in front of it.
If Windows redetects the gameport (you will see a small speech bubble at the bottom right corner of your screen. Once it has finished doing that then go and check the status of your controller in Game Controllers/Gaming Options and see if it is still Not Connected. If it is then the controller may be faulty - if you can, get it tested on another PC to be sure but otherwise take it back to the store for an exchange (if it is still covered by its warranty).
Good luck, and please post any more details and model number if above does not work. |
